Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Meets Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed to Discuss Bilateral Relations and Regional Stability

The Ardahan Newspaper | Since 1995 |

ADDIS ABABA — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during a working visit to Ethiopia, signaling a continued thaw in relations between the two Horn of Africa neighbors.

According to official statements, the high-level talks focused heavily on enhancing bilateral relations, strengthening regional security coordination, boosting economic development, and fostering long-term stability across the region.

Relations between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa had previously faced severe strain following a controversial maritime memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland. However, diplomatic ties entered a recovery phase following intense mediation efforts led by Turkey, which culminated in the historic Ankara Declaration.

This latest meeting between President Mohamud and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is seen as a crucial step forward in sustaining that diplomatic momentum, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to dialogue and mutual cooperation.
