A violent incident occurred outside a business venue in the Akkent neighborhood of Gaziantep today. Melih Meriç, a Member of Parliament representing Gaziantep for the Yeni Party, sustained injuries following a stabbing attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.
Providing an official update on the lawmaker's condition, Gaziantep Governor Kemal Çeber reassured the public that the surgery was successful. "He was taken into surgery right away. Fortunately, none of the severe complications we initially feared materialized, and his condition has stabilized," Governor Çeber stated.
Following the assault, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Numan Kurtulmuş issued a statement condemning the violence: "I strongly condemn the attack against Yeni Party Gaziantep MP Melih Meriç and extend my wishes for a speedy recovery. Violence can have no justification, excuse, or legitimacy. As the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, we will continue to stand against all forms of violence and ensure this incident is fully investigated and those responsible are held accountable before the law." Law enforcement authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the attack.
