PSG Claims Super Cup Glory: From the Rich History of the Europa League to Today

Paris Saint-Germain secured the UEFA Super Cup title by defeating Aston Villa 2-1, thanks to goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué. In this prestigious annual fixture contested between the reigning UEFA Champions League winners and the UEFA Europa League champions, Champions League winners PSG showcased their dominance over their English counterparts to seal another European trophy. As top-tier European football continues to excite fans with clashes like the Super Cup, the historic Europa League remains a foundational pillar of this continental success.

Tracing its roots back to the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1955, the competition was officially rebranded as the UEFA Cup for the 1971–72 season. Over time, it absorbed both the Cup Winners' Cup and the Intertoto Cup, eventually adopting its current UEFA Europa League structure in the 2009–10 season. Spanish side Sevilla FC holds the record for the most titles with seven trophies. While Tottenham Hotspur won the inaugural tournament in 1972, Galatasaray remains the sole Turkish team to lift the trophy, securing their historic triumph in 2000.
