A targeted law enforcement operation has hit Üsküdar Municipality as part of an ongoing investigation led by the Istanbul Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into alleged illegalities during building permit and occupancy certification phases. A total of six individuals, including Mayor Sinem Dedetaş and Deputy Mayor Ceyhun Ünlü, were taken into custody.
The case files expose intricate operational dynamics behind the alleged misconduct. Investigators report a 361 million TL shell network facilitated through encrypted mailing systems. Crucial insights were gained from a key suspect utilizing state leniency measures; the confession reveals that illicit cash sums amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars—smuggled into municipal parking structures via sports bags and confectionary boxes—were subsequently handed over directly inside the executive mayoral office.
Born in 1981 in Eskişehir, Sinem Dedetaş holds undergraduate and master's degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Istanbul Technical University. She made history between 2014 and 2016 as the first female president of the Chamber of Marine Engineers, later serving as General Manager of Istanbul's municipal ferry operator (İBB Şehir Hatları) from 2019 to 2023. Securing the mayoral seat for the CHP in the March 2024 elections, her term was notably marked by the revocation and recovery of municipal properties previously assigned to high-profile foundations like TÜRGEV, Ensar, and Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî.
